What are the Symptoms of Pregnancy?

The first symptom of pregnancy is known as menstrual delay over 7 days. When this pregnancy symptom is observed alone, it is not sufficient for a definitive diagnosis but no symptoms that occur while the menstrual cycle is in progress can be considered as a finding of pregnancy. In any case, there should be suspicion of pregnancy and above all, the menstrual cycle should not be continued for pregnancy test application. General symptoms of pregnancy are:

  • Amenorrhea: If you usually have very regular mensturate periods and your period is delayed, you may decide to take a pregnancy test. However, if you do not have a regular menstrual cycle, you may want to review other symptoms of pregnancy first.
  • Nausea in the Morning: Nausea in the morning is one of the most common first pregnancy symptoms. Nausea and vomiting usually begin at about 6 weeks of pregnancy and ends at week 12.
  • Sensitivity in Breasts: Sensitive, enlarged breasts are another early symptom of pregnancy caused by an increase in the amount of hormones. This feeling will decrease after the first three months when your body adapts to hormonal changes.
  • Frequent Urination: You will notice that you need to urinate more frequently immediately after becoming pregnant. As your pregnancy progresses, you will continue to urinate frequently or this will become more severe.
  • Excessive Fatigue: You may feel tired in the first few weeks of your pregnancy, which you are not used to. This is caused by hormonal changes and will improve when you enter the second trimester.
  • Mood Changes: Don’t worry if you experience emotional tides at the beginning of your pregnancy. Sudden changes in mood, irritability and desire to cry are completely normal and this improves when your hormones calm down after the first few months.
  • Loathing or Craving from Food: When you become pregnant, you may not like certain foods, such as coffee or fried foods, or craving certain foods. The reason for this is again hormonal changes. As long as you eat healthy, these situations are completely harmless.

What Are Early Pregnancy Symptoms?

Early pregnancy symptoms are physiological symptoms that are observed during the first week and indicate the presence of a possible pregnancy. Although the first symptom is a delay in menstruation, other pregnancy symptoms can be listed as follows:

  • Breast tenderness and swelling, darkening in the nipple and tingling sensation in the nipple,
  • Feeling of tenderness and swelling in the lower parts of the abdomen,
  • Complaints of vomiting with nausea, especially in the morning,
  • Fatigue, tiredness, dizziness and tendency to sleep,
  • The need to urinate frequently without increasing urine,
  • It is increased in the frequency of vaginal secretion.

These symptoms are the first signs of pregnancy and are most likely the harbinger of a pregnancy. However, all these symptoms may not be considered sufficient for a definitive diagnosis and may also occur due to a health problem. For a definitive diagnosis, these symptoms should be supported by early pregnancy testing and ultrasound findings.

What is a Pregnancy Test?

The fact that the hormone called HCG, which is started to be secreted with the formation of pregnancy, rises above a certain level in the blood and urine is decisive for the definitive diagnosis of pregnancy. The hormone named LH, which has the same structural features as HCG, is responsible for ovulation and increases periodically during the menstrual cycle. In order to make this distinction, the level of HCG hormone is determined by measuring the beta fraction of this hormone, ß-HCG. When the ß-HCG value in the blood rises above a certain level, it begins to be excreted in the urine. Pregnancy tests with urinalysis are concluded according to the level of this ß-HCG value. Although it is stated that pregnancy tests taken from pharmacies and applied at home are 99% reliable, researches show that the error rate can reach 50%. The application that will give the most accurate result for the analysis of pregnancy is to confirm the presence of ß-HCG in the blood. This blood test, which ensures pregnancy even in the first few days of menstrual delay, is the most reliable method preferred for many years.
